How to Layout a Successful Development Team?

April 11, 2019 admin 0 Comments

According to statistics, ‘75% of developers admit that their projects are either always or usually doomed right from the start’. One of the main reasons behind the failure of development and IT projects is that team in not in coherence, are unsure about their responsibilities and do not enjoy a good work relationship among themselves.

A good team, thereof is the make or break of a project. When working on a project, a number of different factors come into play that need to be looked after.

“Most analyses conclude that between 65 and 80% of IT projects fail to meet their objectives, and also run significantly late or cost far more than planned.”
– Portland Business Journal

In this article, we have listed down steps on how you can layout a development team that will deliver successful projects..

Step 1: Hiring the best talent

The first step on laying out a successful development team starts from hiring the best resources you have. When you are making a new team and going through the initial phases of hiring – it is important to leave no stone unturned. From taking technical tests to conducting communication and interpersonal interviews – the goal should be to shortlist candidates who have both the technical as well as communication skills to become a part of a team. Whether the potential employees are team players or one-man army is also a significant factor during the hiring process.

Step 2: Seamless communication

According to one Canadian study, “Bad communications between parties are the cause of IT project failures in 57% of cases they studied.”

Now that you have hired the best developers in the market, the next step is to create an environment that encourages communication among team members. Being developers, they will need to collaborate with each other on a daily basis – especially if they are working on one project. By incorporating different tools like slack, Microsoft Teams and Skype for communication – they will have a number of a channels to communicate effectively among themselves.

Step 3: Arrange daily scrum meetings

Scum meetings are important for any efficient team. When the team manager and coworkers sit together everyday to discuss issues they are facing in work and the overall progress of project – it provides a window to everyone to understand each other better. Employees can help each other in the conception, development or QA phase by offering a fresh perspective. This also provides manager a daily update on what is going on with the project.

Step 4: Setting clear goals

According to an IBM study, only 40% of projects meet schedule, budget and quality goals.  Further, they found that the biggest barriers to success are people factors. This fact emphasizes the importance of creating practical and achievable goals. When the developers have no idea about what is expected of them and their deadlines, they will fail to deliver on time. When a project has clear goals, short-term (daily, weekly) and long term (monthly and yearly), it is easier to track the progress.

Step 5: Adapt

The reason why agile methodology is so popular in the IT world is its ability to adapt. In contrast to Waterfall, agile enables all the stakeholders to enhance/improve/modify the project. The same methodology is required for a successful development team. When the team members are eager to adapt themselves to new technologies and switch from one language to another, the team has a higher rate of being and efficient and a successful team.
